A page (numbered 173-174) with Queen's (Elisabeth I) "a Proclamation against certain seditious and schismatical Books and Libels, &c.". Printed by Charles Barker in London in 1588. Queen Elizabeth I issued a proclamation against seditious and heretical books, aiming to suppress the spread of unauthorized and potentially dangerous religious or political ideas. The proclamation reinforced strict regulations on printing, prohibiting the publication of any book without prior approval from the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Bishop of London. It was part of a broader effort to maintain religious and political stability in England, particularly against Catholic and Puritan dissent. Christopher Barker, the Queen’s official printer, played a key role in enforcing these regulations, holding the exclusive patent to print the Bible and other important texts. His position allowed him to control the dissemination of approved literature while ensuring that seditious works were censored and destroyed. Dimensions: 19, 5 cm x 16 cm. Page is in "very good" condition with minimal wear to the sewn side. Text is in English, printed in English blackletter. There is watermark which seems to be a part of so-called "jester-cap" (fools-cap). Such watermarks characterise papers used by English Royal printers.
